The snow was melting.
This was one of the first things Valentine noticed when she arose one early Spring morning. She was glad to be rid of the stuff, snow brought back memories of loneliness and betrayal. In Valentine's experience, snow made hearts freeze over and eyes turn cold. She didn't trust the stuff in the slightest.
The pretty cream dog began the day in quite an amicable mood. The end of snow was always lucky for her, it meant new beginnings, new faces, and flowers! Flowers were one of Valentine's favorite things, and the melting of the snow was one of the most poignant harbinger to their arrival.
The mood lasted up until Valentine entered a large forest. The place looked foreboding and a delicate creature such as herself was easily spooked in such places. 'Be brave.' Valentine told herself firmly as she entered the forest. Perhaps the forest only looked frightening, maybe something wonderful was waiting just inside it.

Grizzley awoke with a quick shake, His coper eyes scanned the early morning light for any signs of danger or threats. His large boxy head snapped to the side as he saw a female Saluki, awoke ina clearing not that far away from the little buff, Grizzley stood on.
Stepping forward he leaped of of the small air born area, and stalked towards the edge of the trees. His well built bodice, and fluffy coat slithered through the shadows. Grizzley stopped and held his head low. His shoulder humped because of the way his neck was, Grizzley growled and then walked into the clearing.
He had totally forgot that in this posture he looked like a young grizzley. He then stopped and growled again as his hackles stood up.

Valentine jumped at the unprecedented growl that suddenly sounded behind her. She wheeled around on spindly legs, her eyes tight with mistrust. Never had a stranger brought her good news. She took in her opponent. He was a big, nay, massive dog with strange copper eyes. She shivered at the site of him. Valentine took a few hasty steps backwards, slipping slightly on the mushy ice below her paws. She swiftly regained her balance and regarded the dog with intense concentration.
"Greetings.." she began, her whimsical voice hardened slightly by fear and confusion. She did not know what to expect from this imposing new comer. Would he be angry? Interested? Kind? Judging by the initial growl she supposed that he would be the former. "I-I mean no harm!" She declared, hoping to preserve herself.
She looked almost comical. A wisp of a dog with bones made of glass and china features declaring that she would be harmless. Any dog could have deduced that. She shivered in the chilly air, pleading with her wide amber eyes.

Grizzley smiled, "sorry for scaring you miss: his soothing melody like voice danced on the breeze as he spoke. His head raised and he was then his proper form looking more then dog now then bear. "I thought you wouldn't" he declared laughing, his soft eyes glued to hers. "I won't hurt you" he declared "proberly end up protecting you then hurting you" he said with a grin.
Grizzley stood there, waiting for the next line of her melody like voice to fll his ears once again. "Wait here" he said, as he raced back into the trees at a slow lope. Finding the only one of this special gift he walked back to the young attractive female. Opening his mouth he dropped a small wild flower that was still attached to it's roots, digging a hole he dropped it in. Grizzley then delicatly pated down the earth using his large paws, looking up he smiled at the female.

Valentine slowly began to calm herself. This dog clearly meant no harm, and what manners! If her mother had been there she would have declared that this large brute was of a good sort! She blushed invisibly under her white fur at the flower and gave a little coo of delight and allowed a shy smile to flit over her face.
"I'm Valentine." She informed him, "Val." Her voice was soft and gentle, she managed to keep the slight stutter that was hard to repress when she felt unsure of herself out of her voice and it ended up flowing like honey out of her mouth. "Is this y-your territory?" She asked quietly, interested to know everything there was to know about this dark stranger with enticing eyes.

Grizzley smiled, and stared at her, his golden eyes moved now investigating her body. She seems uncomfortable, and uneasy. Grizzley smiled, he liked her name "mine is Grizzley'' she said still dazed by her emense buety.
"Yes" he said quietly after a long pause. ''I am the King of the Ursus arctos Pack, and I am looking for a queen though now females have come to this part before" he said confidently. ''Would you like to be friends" he asked shyly.
Staring out at the horizion, He saw eagles and hawks circling in the sky. Grizzley layed down and then stared at the young female. His small curved ears swurved toward her ready to catch her lovely voice.

"Grizzley..." Valentine repeated the name softly. She quieted though as he continued. A king! A pack! Valentine could hardly believe her ears. Her tail swished quickly back and forth, excitement growing the the pit of her stomach. "Would I like to be friends?" She repeated the question, her face blank. Suddenly a smile crept over her muzzle. "Why yes." She declared, "I think I would like that quite a bit."
Valentine knew that if her high-flying mother could see her than she would hiss, 'Don't settle for friendship! Aim higher! Settle for no less than royalty!' However, Valentine was not her mother. While of course every young dog harbored a secret undying sense of romanticism and yearned to be a princess, Valentine was content just to speak to a dog, she had been alone for ever so long.

Grizzley smiled ''Thinking about you mother and how she would act" he asked shyly. He then smiled "would you like to play" he asked. He knew that he had to be as gentle as he could on this female, he didn't want to hurt her.
Getting up, he then raced aroung the clearing excitedly. Running back to Valentine, he bowed and waged his tail excitedly his whole body moving.

Valentine gaped at his intuitiveness then she sighed ruefully. "I spent so long trying to please her but it wasn't enough. I suppose parts of me still yearn for her approval though I know it will never come." Valentine caught herself just in time, she had been about to recount her life story to a near stranger. How embarrassing! Luckily Grizzley had already moved on to lighter topics. "Sure!" She laughed, a pure but rusty sound, the sound of one who had laughed so little in recent times.
However, running was something Valentine did best. As soon as Grizzley returned to her with a mocking little bow she bolted, easily clearing the same distance he had reached, her long legs were good for something other than knocking herself over. She barked happily upon returning to Grizzley, melting snow kicked up by her paws, the muddy ground staining her white feet.

Grizzley smiled as she ran around then, he barked and jumped to the side. Grizzley smiled as Valentine returned to him. He stopped all of the sudden, his boxy nose was to the air in seconds after he had heard a sound. Two wolves were in his territory, and they had something about them he had delt with before, they had rabies. With out moving he strictly told valentine to get behind him. He then growled and his hackles stood up as the two entered the clearing the foam around their mouth dripped on the soft earth.

Valentine opened her mouth to let out a rippling laugh but the sound caught in her throat at Grizzley's sudden change of temper. Naturally she hadn't been paying attention to the smells in the air, she had just been having fun. Franticly she inhaled, trying to pinpoint the source of Grizzley's terror.
And there it was. Wolves. She'd know the smell any where. Swift as an arrow she obeyed Grizzley and slipped behind him like a ghost. She had not been behind him for five seconds when two wolves, foam dripping from their jaws. If Valentine could get any whiter she would have. Fear instantaneously replaced the feeling of joy that had been hers only seconds ago. A tiny whimper escaped the Saluki's mouth as the wolves began to stalk forward.

Grizzley growled loudly, lowering his head and humpinghis shoulders, he charged. The one wolf sprung and was grabbed by grizzley, grizzley shook his massive head instantly killing the wolf. The other one two was killed in the same way.
Grizzley then returned to Valentine, "are u alright" he asked protectively..

If Valentine could get any whiter she would have. The cream colored dog was shivering in fear as Grizzley sprang at the wolves. Grizzley was big but those wolves had strength in numbers, and if Grizzley was bitten...Valentine could hardly bear to think it, and truly it was a very real possibility.
Grizzley, however, was a born warrior. The way he expertly lunged and sliced with his claws led Valentine to believe that this was not his first battle. He turned to her and she could not help but take a few quick steps back. She could not help but be a bit frightened by this gentle male who only a few moments ago had been a killing machine.
'Are you alright?'
Grizzley's question cut through the air like a knife. Valentine tried to formulate a coherent reply before giving up and stuttering, "A bit s-shaken, b-but fine."

Grizzley frowned "I am sorry I guess I can get to protective, at times!'' He sighed then wqalked away and layed down that was one of my down falls.. He sighed then closed his eyes, his large fur moving up and down with his breathing as he waited for Valentine to make her next move..

Valentine calmed a bit. He wasn't dangerous at all, not to her at any rate. She padded towards him and laid down near him. "I suppose I'm just a bit naive." She whispered. A spark of fear suddenly flared in her mind. She was starting to but trust in this dog, and what happened when you trusted someone? They betrayed you. Life had learnt her that. Everyone that she had cared for had left her, why should this dog be any different.
After she had allowed herself to hope this realization was a let dog. 'Stop it, Valentine.' She commanded herself. 'Give him a chance, maybe he'll be different!' Valentine sighed and thought to herself, 'I suppose we shall see.'
